It doesn’t matter if you’re brand new or if you’ve been at this for a while, everyone needs to know the importance of owning their own “Virtual Real Estate”.

What does that mean?

It means that there are many free platforms online (some that are very popular) where you can start an online business and literally get a page or site up and running for free.  Sounds good, right?

Well, there’s one little thing you need to know before you put all your eggs in someone else’s basket.  Someone else owns those sites and they are the ones who make the rules, change the rules and enforce the rules.  They can even make the decision to close down their site, sell their site, etc.  You are simply a guest to them – or you could even compare it to “renting”

So, what am I saying?

I’m saying you need to own your own space – a site where you can build your online presence, where you can do whatever you want without someone telling you that you how many affiliate links are allowed on your site, or that you have to write more, or write better, blah blah blah.

It happens.  It happened to me.  I was looking for something inexpensive and I started my online career on one of these sites.  I wasn’t doing anything sneaky or against the law or anything out of the ordinary.  I was plugging along and then the rules changed.  They decided that my particular subject (online marketing) attracted spam and that they didn’t want that.  It wasn’t that I had done something wrong, but I was the one who got punished.  They closed my sites – with no warning.

So I decided to host my own site.  I had no idea what I was doing.  It looked just like Greek to me when I logged in.  But let me tell you this.  When you decide to host your own sites, you must make sure that you purchase hosting services from a company who will give you guidance and support.  You’ll need it.  I’ve heard all kinds of horror stories from people who were just left hanging because they went with a cheap hosting company.  But to tell you the truth, it’s one of the least expensive things I purchase anyway.  I think I pay $7.95 per month for unlimited domains, bandwidth, etc.  It’s great.

I personally use HostGator – it is probably the most popular hosting company on the internet and their support is stellar.  I know.  I’ve gotten into some problems when I was messing around in areas that I shouldn’t have been.  But they helped me straighten it out.
